Marketplace plans are the individual health insurance market created by the Affordable Care Act. Every plan covers the same ten categories of essential health benefits, cannot ask about pre-existing conditions, and cannot charge you more for having them. What differs is the metal tier, the network, the drug list and the price.
The metal tiers describe how costs are split, not how good the care is. Bronze plans have the lowest premiums and the highest deductibles. Silver plans are the middle, and are the only tier where cost-sharing reductions apply if your household income qualifies. Gold plans cost more each month and much less when you use them. A healthy household that never hits the deductible and a household with a chronic condition should usually be in different tiers.
The advance premium tax credit is based on your estimated household income for the coverage year and on your household size. Estimate it too low and you repay part of the credit at tax time; too high and you overpay all year and get it back later. For anyone with variable income, getting this estimate right is most of the work, and it is why 1099 earners get their own page here.
What this covers
- Ten essential health benefit categories. Ambulatory care, emergency services, hospitalisation, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use, prescription drugs, rehabilitative services, laboratory, preventive and wellness, and pediatric services including dental and vision.
- No pre-existing condition exclusions. No medical underwriting, no waiting periods for existing conditions, no higher premium for health history.
- Preventive care at no cost share. In-network preventive services listed in the federal guidelines are covered without copay or deductible.
- An annual out-of-pocket maximum. Every Marketplace plan caps what you pay in a year for in-network essential benefits.
- Subsidies if you qualify. Advance premium tax credits reduce the monthly premium; cost-sharing reductions on Silver plans reduce deductibles and copays for qualifying incomes.
How we work it with you
- Estimate household income honestly. Modified adjusted gross income for the coverage year, for everyone on the tax return. We walk through the parts people forget: self-employment income net of expenses, unemployment, and a spouse's bonus.
- Check for an affordable employer offer. An offer of affordable employer coverage for you or a family member changes subsidy eligibility. This is the most common reason a subsidy gets clawed back.
- List doctors and prescriptions. Marketplace networks in Florida are often narrow. We check each provider and each drug against the specific plan, not the carrier.
- Model two tiers, not one. We show Silver with cost-sharing reductions against Bronze and Gold across a light year and a heavy year, so the trade-off is visible.
- Set a mid-year income check. If income moves, report it. We diarise a check-in so a raise or a slow quarter does not turn into a surprise at tax time.
Who this usually fits
- You are under 65 without employer coverage
- You are between jobs, recently divorced, or aged off a parent's plan
- Your household income may qualify for a premium tax credit
- You want an independent read on which metal tier actually fits your usage
When we would point you elsewhere
If your employer offers coverage that is affordable under the federal test, you will generally not qualify for a premium tax credit on a Marketplace plan. We check that before anything else.

What drives the cost
Typical ranges for this area. Your own price depends on your address, your age and the plan you pick.
| Factor | Typical range or shape | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze deductible | $6,000 - $9,200 | Low premium, high exposure. Sensible for people who want catastrophic protection only. |
| Silver with cost-sharing reductions | Deductible can drop sharply at qualifying incomes | CSRs apply only on Silver. This is why Silver is often the right answer at lower incomes even when Bronze looks cheaper. |
| Gold plan premium | Highest monthly, lowest usage cost | Often right for maternity years, planned surgery, or ongoing specialist care. |
| Advance premium tax credit | Set by income and household size | Reconciled on your federal tax return. Report income changes during the year. |

Questions we are asked about aca marketplace plans
During annual Open Enrollment, or within 60 days of a qualifying life event such as losing other coverage, marriage, birth or adoption, or a permanent move. Our enrollment calculator lists the triggers and the window each one opens.
Report it to the Marketplace. Your credit is adjusted forward, which is far better than discovering a repayment at tax time. We cover this in detail on the self-employed page.
Pediatric dental is an essential health benefit and is either embedded in the plan or offered as a separate pediatric dental plan. We confirm which before you enrol.
No. There is no cost to you for our help with a Marketplace plan, and the premium is the same whether you enrol through us or on your own.
